Keeping Your Faculty Site secure

Your site is a first stop for everything about your professional career at Iowa State University, which means that it's incredibly important to follow best practices for keeping your site secure. Following the steps below can help prevent accidentally allowing others access to your site and other services connected to your Net-ID.

Avoid logging in to sites using public or borrowed computers

Logging in to edit your site on public or borrowed computer presents an opportunity for users after you to log in and make edits with your account. Even if you choose to log out of your site using the button at the top of the screen you are still logged in to other services that use ISU Okta sign-ons, like your email account, CyBox storage, and many others. For this reason, we recommend only editing your site on your own, secure device.

Use Iowa State's VPN when off campus

How to install and use the Iowa State VPN

Iowa State's VPN will give you secure remote access to campus network services. When you are not already on campus and connected to a campus network, using Iowa State's VPN is always recommended for editing your site or other ISU services.

Only give login access to trusted users

Advanced and Full-scale sites give you the option to let other users access your site to create profiles, add or edit content, and give access to additional users. You can learn more about adding users to your site on this tutorial.

Make sure to carefully review the different permission levels before adding another user to your site to make sure you understand the kind of changes they can make. We recommend only giving users the level of access they need.
